Week of June 27th 2016

This week…
In our classroom we have mentioned a couple of things about kindergarten throughout the school year so that the transition process is successful for our students. However, over the next two days we will go more in depth on the topic. Students will share their ideas, expectations and feeling about kindergarten as well as look at some kindergarten classroom in person, online and on pictures. Over the next three weeks, we will focus more on the academic skills need for kindergarten such as number and letter recognition, letter sounds, number writing, simple addition and subtraction and literature.

How To Prepare Your Child For Kindergarten | Mama Knows

At home you can…

Use pretend play to explore the idea of Kindergarten.

Take turns being the parent, child, and teacher. Act out common daily routines, such as saying good-bye to mommy and/or daddy, taking off your coat, singing songs, reading stories, playing outside, and sitting down to “work”. Reassure your child that Kindergarten is a good place where he/she will have fun and learn. Answer his/her questions patiently. This helps children feel more in control which reduces their anxiety due to this new stage in their lives.

You should also take your child to visit the school he/she will be attending next school year. This might help them get excited about Kindergarten and reduce anxiety.
